Our Curriculum

We use the present National Curriculum and NYCC Guidance to develop our personalised curriculum.  This is designed to reflect the learning needs and the interests of the individual children at Rosedale.  

In 2013-14,  staff from both partner schools within our Federation attended training 'Designing and Delivering an Innovative Curriculum', based on the new National Curriculum, which was introduce in September 2014.

The federation of Rosedale Abbey School with Nawton School has seen us take advantage of a broader range of individual staff strengths and interests.  KS2 children will work together for a half-day on a weekly basis at Nawton School, studying French, Music and PE.  They do however, also collaborate on a wide variety of other projects and activities which enrich their curriculum significantly. An example of such work in 2013-14 included a folk music project with professional musicians and our specialist music teacher, which culminated in a very entertaining and enjoyable concert for friends and family.

We consider a major curricular development over the past year, to have been the development of a 'Forest School'.  Three staff trained, and have been accredited by, North Yorkshire LA as Forest School leaders.  The Forest School ethos of environmental knowledge and understanding, enjoying our natural environment, team working, self sufficiency and survival skills has enriched all that we, as a school already do. It has added understanding to subjects such as geography and science, as well as considerably extending our provision of outdoor and adventurous activity.  Groups of children from both schools attended a weekly forest school session last winter where we took advantage of the superb environment of the Rosedale valley to learn skills like careful observation, tracking, shelter building and tree identification.
